Free beds for low income families

Beds, tables or cabinets will be available in the new Prague furniture bank for those who need them most. The service will offer help to elderly people, single-parent families or young people who leave behind orphanages or similar institutions.

More than 80,000 Czechs face financial difficulties equipping their homes with basic furniture and appliances. Those who live in or around Prague will now be able to head to the newly opened furniture bank in the south of the capital. Free beds for low income families

The bank, opened thanks to the collaboration of the Libuš district with the Center for Social Services in Prague, aims to alleviate the situation of some of the most vulnerable groups of the population, according to Martin Šimáček, director of the Center for Social Services.

“More than 20,000 very poor people live on the territory of Prague. Every year, more than a thousand young people leave institutional care settings and need to equip their homes. They all need help.”

Šimáček says that without support, a quarter of young people end up living on the streets.

Another of the most needy groups are some families, who are often forced to make impossible decisions, explains Milena Johnová, from the Prague City Council.

“In Prague there are many families and people who, when thinking about home, have to decide whether they will buy a bed for their children or pay the rent.”

The bank looks like a furniture store. On one side are shelves and cabinets, donated by companies that decided to get rid of old office furniture. Next to it you can even see new equipment, courtesy of a multinational company. However, all those interested can contribute and, according to bank representatives, have already been contacted by several donors.

All those who have furniture or appliances that no longer serve them, can contact the bank. They must be items in good condition, regardless of their age. The bank will also accept equipment that needs minor repairs, as long as these can be carried out by the bank’s employees.

Simply call, send photos and arrange delivery. If the donors cannot transport the furniture to Libuš, the bank employees will pick it up.

Once on site, the Free furniture and appliances will be delivered to those who need them most. The aid of the new bank is designated for all those who do not have sufficient resources to ensure the minimum living conditions and who need subsidies from the State. Another group is made up of people who have a recommendation from social services. However, exceptions also apply, according to the director of the furniture bank, Tomáš Valenta.

“If we, after consulting with the management, consider that it is a family that needs material help, but is not in contact with any social service, there is no problem, we will also help them“.

The Libuš furniture bank is the first in the Czech capital, although a similar service on a smaller scale was previously offered by the non-governmental organization R-mosty. However, due to great interest, the capital authorities decided to open their own bank.

Looking ahead, they plan that the bank in Libuš could also become a social enterprise. People who have difficulty finding employment could be hired to repair furniture and appliances donated to the bank.

Dallas, Texas. Beds and mattresses for less fortunate children in North Texas are in high demand. In early 2021, the SM Wright Foundation created two events called “Bed for Kids” and “Drive Thru of Blessings” to respond to this growing need in a more efficient, safe and COVID 19 friendly way. Texas who sign up and qualify for assistance receive a bedding set that includes a frame, box spring and mattress.

To qualify, a family must complete an application, show proof of income (if applicable) and residency, provide a valid birth certificate for each child, and meet federal poverty guidelines.
